Book Beginnings: The Piano Teacher - Janice Y.K. Lee

Please check out this post about our challenge.

'It started as an accident.'

The somewhat unusual beginning to The Piano Teacher. As I think this book is about a love affair it makes you wonder quite what's going on.

I guess I'll find out over the course of the next week.

  1. hm...an affair between student and teacher? An accident indeed. Isn't this a movie too?

    1. I don't think that the affair's with the student as it's a female teacher and a female student and it's set in the 40's/50's. And it might be a movie, but I think there was another book with the same title which was made into a movie.

  2. A lot of things start as an accident. What you do with it makes the story. Here is my post:

    1. That's very true, most things do start out that way. I'll check it out :)

  4. I think this was made into a movie. The affair part sounds familiar.

    1. I googled it after Amber mentioning it. I think I'd thought the same thing previously, which may be why I had a suspicion. But the film, was actually based on the book of the same name by Elfriede Jelinek. The two are actually based on different continents and in different time periods. And I guess it's unsurprising that the affair part sounds familiar as it's a relatively common theme both in history and literature :)

  5. Combined with the dreamy cover, that makes a lovely, elegant beginning.

Rayme Waters – the author of my Book Beginnings book – guest posted on Rose City Reader today, explaining how the heroines of 19th Century literature inspired her debut novel, The Angels' Share.

It will give you a much different idea about the book than the opening sentence.

Thanks for participating in Book Beginnings!
