Book Beginnings: Brideshead Revisited - Evelyn Waugh

'When I reached the 'C' Company lines, which were at the top of the hill, I paused and looked back at the camp, just coming into full view below me through the grey mist of early morning.'

This was an unexpected beginning, I thought the book, perhaps unfairly derived from the cover was  more about parties. And yet the character in question doesn't appear to be someone who would attend a party.

I hope this book turns out to be as good, or better, than I anticipate it to be.

Have you ever judged a book by it's cover?

  1. I always judge books by their covers and I'm soooo excited for you! You're embarking on a wonderful, poignant story. You will find that this cover does do justice to part of the story and I hope you take the time to search out the old BBC series from the 1980's starring Jeremy Irons and Anthony Andrews
(I just did a quick google - you can see some of them on youtube now....just listening to the theme music has got me all a-dither again!!)
Lucky you - discovering this for the first time :-)

    1. That's an enthusiastic response! Love it! I'll try and look out the BBC series to watch, they tend to be good :) . My personal favourite being the Colin Firth/ Jennifer Ehle adaptation of Pride and Prejudice!

  2. This one sounds like a great story...and while the beginning doesn't seem to match the cover, I'm guessing that more will be revealed. Thanks for sharing, and enjoy.

  5. I don't judge books by their covers. I am not very visual and seldom remember the covers. I judge books by the blurbs on the back cover or the author's name. I do agree that the cover and the first line don't seem to agree in this one. I hope you enjoy it. Happy reading!

    1. The Cover isn't the sole reason I'll choose a book, but I have to admit it does have a hefty say in my feelings towards a particular book! Occasionally I'll pick up a book because a particular person wrote it, but less so as I get older. That burned me a few times :) I find that the cover art often matches my feelings towards a book as a whole. Thanks :)

My review won't be posted on this blog so watch out for my challenge links where it should come up sometime in the near future :)

    1. Very often the books by an author tend to be of a consistent standard style don't they? So I guess I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

  9. I often judge a book by its cover, and sometimes even buy a book just for the cover. The first line of this one sounds very interesting.
